Klopp has no common sense - Nicol

20.10: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has no common sense in waiting until January to solve their defensive issues, according to Reds legend Steve Nicol.

Nicol says Klopp should have had a plan B to Virgil van Dijk, who was a target throughout the summer.

“Clearly Liverpool at this present time aren’t thinking rationally and don’t have an awful lot of common sense,” he said on ESPN FC.

“If they think they can muddle through until maybe the January window when they think they can get Van Dijk, then they’re kidding themselves.”

Klopp shouldn't be sacked - Quinn

16.30: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should NOT be sacked, according to Reds fan and pundit Micky Quinn.

Klopp has seen his odds on becoming the next Premier League manager to be sacked tumble from 100/1 to 16/1 over the last five days.

However, Quinn believes it is too early to claim he should be removed from his role.

“Sacking’s a ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous, statement,” he said on talkSPORT.

“It’s early season and I still think they’ll have a good season.”

Ox made no sense - Quinn

15.10: Liverpool signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal made no sense, according to pundit and Reds fan Micky Quinn.

Quinn says Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must rebuild Oxlade-Chamberlain’s confidence after his poor start at Anfield.

“He’s got a mental rebuilding problem for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Klopp, he’s got to turn that kids form around,” he said on talkSPORT.

“He’s gone there to play in the middle and he’s started on the right-wing.

“I just don’t see the sense of that signing.”

Klopp hits back

14.00: Jurgen Klopp has defended his Liverpool team, claiming they can and will turn things around despite their defensive frailties.

“It sounds like we have nil points and are the worst team in the league!” he said.

“I understand 100 percent we talk about it here. I already know the problems and have already decided what to do.

“We have the right characters. Sometimes we react well, other times not perfectly. We can improve.

"Character is nothing fixed. You can’t say you cannot change your mentality, of course we can.”

Lallana injury return

12:30: Adam Lallana has stepped up his recovery from a thigh injury by running outside for the first time since August.

Liverpool's statement said: "Adam Lallana took another important step in his rehabilitation on Thursday morning by running outside at Melwood for the first time since sustaining a thigh injury.

"The Liverpool midfielder was out jogging at the training ground as he continues to recover from the issue he picked up during the Audi Cup final at the beginning of August."

Liverpool compensation deal done

11:20: Liverpool and the Premier League have announced they have agreed a compensation settlement with the family of a teenage victim to finally resolve the tapping up scandal.

The statement said: "The Premier League and Liverpool FC have reached a constructive agreement regarding the future education of a young player who was unable to register with the club.

"Under the terms of the agreement, the player will be able to continue his education at his current school.

"He will also be free to join another club in the academy system without that club being required to pay compensation, which has been settled with his former club, Stoke City FC."

A league investigation found Liverpool guilty of offering prohibited inducements in an attempt to recruit a schoolboy from Stoke.

Mane's Liverpool confidence

10:30: Sadio Mane is confident Liverpool will end their September slump sooner rather than later.

“Sometimes it can happen in football, but the most important thing is the reaction and it is important to do that,” Mane told ESPNFC.

“We have a great team and great qualities in the team, and I think we will do it.

“We are not focused on other teams, just on ourselves, and we know we can beat any team in the league.

“These kind of results can happen in any team, but we will do our best to change the situation. We will try to take it game by game.”

Liverpool and Tottenham battle

08.10: Liverpool and Tottenham are keen on a deal for Werder Bremen wonderkid David Philipp.

Sky Deutschland claim both Premier League sides are interested in the 17-year-old midfielder.

And Bremen fear he may be whisked away to England in the future.

Bremen academy director Bjorn Schierenbeck said: “I wouldn’t want to rule out the interest in David from the English clubs.

“But I don’t know exactly how firm it is. We would be very eager to continue working together with David.

“We have already held talks with him, and explained what his future career with Werder can look like.”

Klopp's Dayot

07.30: Liverpool are keen on RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to BILD.

Liverpool’s defence has come under scrutiny this season after going four games without a win.

And German publication BILD claim they are eyeing the France youngster.

The 18-year-old only joined Leipzig in January from Red Bull Salzburg.

But he has a new contract offer on the table from the Germans which would raise his buyout clause to €100m.

Coutinho still not ready

07.15: Philippe Coutinho is still finding his fitness after suffering illness and injury at the start of the season, according to Jurgen Klopp.

The midfielder played 45 minutes against Leicester in the Carabao Cup after starting against Burnley at the weekend.

But he needs time to build up his fitness levels.

Klopp said: “That was the plan before the game [to take him off at half-time], he needs match time but it was not for a second the plan [to keep him on] and it was not allowed to let him play again for 90 minutes, or 60 or 70 or 80 or whatever.

“It was clear that 45 is the limit, we need to make him fit but we cannot push him through. That’s all.”

Liverpool need a Kante

07.00: Dean Saunders thinks Liverpool need a midfield general in the style of N’Golo Kante to win the league.

The Reds have struggled since the international break, failing to win any of their last four games.

And Saunders believes they need a better defensive structure starting with the base of midfield.

“Individually, they’ve got to be good enough to play for a big club,” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“The minute you took [N’Golo] Kante out of Leicester’s team they started shipping goals.

“[Danny] Drinkwater didn’t look as good, Wes Morgan and [Robert] Huth didn’t look as good.

“That man that sits in front of the back-four has to have a defensive mind. He’s got to think: ‘what if - all the time. What if we lose it? What if it gets cleared? What if our right-back’s gone forward?’

“Kante does that. Not only does he think that way he’s quick over the ground –so he’s brilliant at it. Have Liverpool protected that back-four?

“Has Jordan Henderson got a mind like Kante’s? I think Jordan Henderson is an athlete that gets around the pitch.

“Has [Emre] Can got a mind like Kante, [Claude] Makelele and [Patrick] Vieira?”
