Man Utd News: Jesse Lingard says Marcus Rashford knows his secret

Lingard and Rashford hit top form as Manchester United dismantled Burton Albion 4-1 in the Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford last night. 

The former got on the scoresheet after Rashford had scored a terrific brace, helping Jose Mourinho’s cup campaign get off to a winning start.

And the England international has revealed he has set himself a goal total for the campaign - but it is a secret that only Manchester United team-mate Rashford knows.

"I think I’d like more goals and assists coming into play this year," he told the club’s official website. 

"Marcus and I have set little targets for ourselves. 

“In each game, we set them ourselves, but that’s our little secret and we have our own ambitions as well. Hopefully we can achieve them."

Rashford has now been involved in 30 goals since making his debut under former boss Louis van Gaal last February.

And, in the time since, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been involved in more.

Lingard reckons Rashford is thriving under Mourinho’s tutelage and his goalscoring exploits could see him scale new heights.

"Each game, he’s improving and he wants to work hard and learn from the best," added Lingard. 

"As long as he keeps scoring goals, people will talk highly about him."

Lingard and Rashford are both in contention to start when United travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon (3pm).
