Shaw has struggled with a number of long-term injuries since he left Southampton for Manchester United in a £30million deal three years ago.

And the 22-year-old has come in for some heavy criticism from manger Jose Mourinho since he took charge at Old Trafford last year.

But Mourinho appears to have faith in the England international, with The Sun claiming he opted to extend his contract until the summer of 2019.

Shaw’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, but his extra year has been triggered.

The Sun add that Shaw’s clause was activated during the summer, when the young left-back was out of action following ankle surgery.

Mourinho last week asked for improvements from Shaw.

The Portuguese boss said: "Look, he doesn't play for six months. I am not expecting him to arrive on Wednesday and to be man of the match or to be running up and down for 45 minutes.

"It's just a process. He doesn't play for a long, long time.

"You have other players in the Premier League that in this moment who are not starting matches and their managers just say 'they're not in the best conditions'.

"And we're speaking about some of the best players of the Premier League. I heard last week the Chelsea manager saying that, I heard the Arsenal manager said that.

"The players are not in their ideas, in their analysis, they're not in the best form after important injuries and long time without playing.

"Luke had surgery and a long time without playing football. I cannot expect him to be back and to be strong, strong, strong in his work."
