Arsenal vs West Brom: Bargain signing Kieran Gibbs will prove his quality - Tony Pulis

BARGAIN boy Kieran Gibbs should only be judged by what he achieves over the coming years, says boss Tony Pulis.

West Brom's Kieran Gibbs will play against his former club Arsenal tonight

Gibbs, a £5million summer buy, is set to start for West Brom as they head to the left-back’s former side Arsenal this evening.

The ex-Gunner joined the Baggies for much less than Pulis had anticipated, as he snapped the defender up on the penultimate day of the summer transfer window.

But Pulis thinks the price tag should not be analysed until the 27-year-old has had time to really stamp his mark on the full-back position.

“That can only be proved by how he plays over the next couple of years,” Pulis said.

“We think it is a good deal but I’ve signed players who have started well and faded.

“I have signed players who have started really poorly and grown into it. Ask me next year!

“You don’t know but it looks a great deal.”

Gibbs has yet to see the Baggies win in any of his three appearances this season.

But after impressing Pulis off the pitch, the Baggies boss is ready to throw his new-boy into the mix for good.

“I think he has taken to the mental side of it as well, in respect of avoiding injuries and preparation for training and before games," he added.

“He’s done very well, we’re pleased to get him for what we paid in the end.

“We’re hoping that over the next few years he’ll be a great asset for this club.”

I’m sure he’ll get a great reception

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claimed last week that he would miss Gibbs more than Alex Orland-Chamberlain, who moved to Liverpool for £40m.

And if the Gunners fans feel the same then Gibbs will be set for a warm welcome when he walks out in blue and white this evening.

“He’ll look forward to it, he did really well there as a player,” Pulis said.

“I’m sure he’ll get a great reception.

“He felt personally it was time to have a new challenge which was great.

“We are fortunate enough to have got the deal done.

“Now it is up to all of us, him and ourselves, to make sure we try and get the best out of him.”
