The head of the Russian Football Union’s security committee, Vladimir Markin, has threatened English supporters with “a long stay in Russia, in conditions our guests won't like.”

Both clubs travel to Eastern Europe for their second group game of the Champions League.

Liverpool face Spartak Moscow tomorrow evening, while Untied play CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

Around 2,000 supporters from both cities are expected to make the 4,000-mile round trip, but it comes with a scathing warning.

CSKA and Spartak have recently come under criticism for the behaviour of their own fans, but the attention has now turned to the travelling English supporters.

"I don't want to scare anyone but I warn those who plan to come here not to support their side and see the country but to commit hooliganism: the law is the same for all, not just for Russians," Markin told TASS state news agency.

“Those who break it will face a suitable punishment, possibly in the form of a long stay in Russia, in conditions our guests won't like."

Russia are on a mission to rid their hooligan reputation ahead of hosting the World Cup in the summer of 2018.

But there is history between the English and Russians, whose supporters clashed on a number of occasions during the 2016 European Championships in France.

Spartak were slapped with a £53,000 (€60,000) fine from UEFA last week after one of their fans fired a flare at the referee during their Champions League opener against Slovenian outfit Maribor.
