Arsene Wenger: Why referee waved away West Brom penalty calls in Arsenal win

ARSENE WENGER insisted the referee was in a tough position for West Brom’s penalty claim.

Jay Rodriguez was clearly upended by Shkodran Mustafi in the box with the game still goalless.

Referee Bobby Madley opted against pointing to the spot, instead letting the West Brom striker get off a shot after he got back up from the challenge.

Petr Cech impressively turned Rodriguez’s effort onto the post before Jake Livermore spurned his chance on the rebound.

Just 12 minutes later and Arsenal were in front after Alexandre Lacazette reacted quickest to head the ball in from five yards after Alexis Sanchez struck the woodwork with a free-kick.

And the France international secured all three points midway through the second half with a goal from the penalty spot after Allan Nyom felled Aaron Ramsey.

But Wenger admits West Brom are right to feel aggrieved over the first half penalty call, however he also understood the referee’s decision.

“It could have been given,” Wenger said.

“The referee played advantage because he had the chance to score. It is a difficult decision.

“You are always under pressure when everyone else wins.

“You know you cannot afford to drop points, a team that can give you a difficult night is West Brom."
