Virgil Van Dijk reckons Liverpool could go far in the Champions League

The Dutch defender was the subject of a long-running transfer saga involving the Anfield club this summer.

But the Reds abandoned their pursuit when Saints threatened to report them to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach.

And the Southampton man has now revealed that he thinks Jurgen Clop’s men - along with Manchester City - could go further than Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea in Europe's premier competition.

When asked which English side would go furthest in the Champions League this season Van Dijk, speaking at the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 18, told Squawka: “I think Liverpool and Man City maybe.”

On their chances of winning the competition outright for a sixth time, he added: “You never know. It’s always going to be difficult and [it’s] a different style of play – European nights are always different.

“Anything can happen, especially if you are the big English clubs who are in the Champions League at the moment.”

Liverpool are the most successful English team in the history of the competition, winning the European Cup four times during the 1970s and 1980s as well as the Champions League in 2005.

In contrast, Manchester City are yet to win the Champions League with their semi-final appearance against Real Madrid in 2016 the furthest the club has gone in the competition.

Van Dijk has only just returned to the first-team fold under Mauricio Pellegrino after demanding to leave the club.

The 26-year-old made his first Southampton appearance of the season earlier this month in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace after coming on as a substitute.
