Chelsea boss Conte was speaking to close friend Massimo Carrera - who manages Spartak Moscow - this week ahead of the Champions League clash in Russia.

The Liverpool boss was unconcerned by the news that Carrera had been discussing his side with his Premier League rival, and pointed to his superior recent record against the Blues.

"We won against Chelsea, by the way. So he probably couldn’t say a lot!" Klopp said.

"OK, they were champions, but we won against them."

Klopp was also asked about his own preparations for tonight’s tie and how he went about researching the opposition.

"I don’t have any former colleagues which I could ask. I have to do my own work," said Klopp.

Italians Carrera and Conte played together after they both joined Juventus in 1991, where they won a Champions League and Serie A, before the Spartak coach departed for Atalanta after five years.

"I did call him the other day but it’s not just Liverpool we discussed. We talked about our families, private matters and all that," said Carrera.

"Liverpool were also mentioned of course.

"No need to point out any of the players — all of them are of exceptional quality.

"But it doesn’t change anything, our task is to neutralise them all and play to our strengths."
