Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp has not improved the defence since Brendan Rodgers left, says Nicol

That is the view of pundit and Liverpool legend Steve Nicol.

Klopp’s Liverpool side have come under serious criticism this season for their defensive displays.

Klopp attempted to bring in a new centre-back in the summer in Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.

However, Saints refused to sell the Dutchman and Liverpool did not pursue another target.

Nicol admits Jurgen Klopp has improved Liverpool’s attacking play no end since becoming manager in 2015.

However, says the defence is no better than what it was under Rodgers.

“No question he’s improved the attacking side of the game,” Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“To the eye, Liverpool under Klopp, going forward, are as good a team to watch as any.

“And that is a fact, as much as stats are facts, that’s a fact as well.

“You can’t talk about that without saying that defensively he has absolutely not made them better defensively.”

Nicol was speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Spartak Moscow last night.

The Reds have now drawn their opening two games in the competition after a 2-2 stalemate with Sevilla two weeks ago.
