Atletico vs Chelsea: David Luiz let his team-mates down again, says Steven Gerrard

That is according to Liverpool legend and BT Sport pundit Steven Gerrard.

Luiz gave away a penalty towards the end of the first-half of the Champions League clash against Atletico for a pull on Lucas Hernandez’s shirt.

Antoine Griezmann tucked the spot-kick away to put his side into the lead.

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand was not pleased with the defending from Brazilian Luiz.

“David Luiz has let himself, let his team-mates down here with what he’s done,” he said.

“That comes with him. He’s the wrong side, he knows he gets the wrong side and he just gets a handful of the shirt and the referee is in a great position.

“He doesn’t even protest.”

Luiz got sent off for a high tackle on Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac in the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge 10 days ago.

Gerrard says tonight was another moment of madness from the 30-year-old.

“It’s the second time in a week he’s let his team-mates down,” Gerrard said.

“He got sent off at Stamford Bridge last week and this is a moment of madness at a time when Chelsea are completely dominating this game and looking likely to get the breakthrough.

“Now it becomes an even tougher task.”

Alvaro Morata equalised for Chelsea in the second half before Michy Batshuayi turned the game on its head in stoppage time to win 2-1.
