Liverpool news: Arsenal fans are laughing at Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deal - Whelan

ARSENAL fans are very happy with the deal that saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain swap the Emirates for Anfield in the summer.

Mick Quinn slams Oxlade-Chamberlain's start at Liverpool

That’s according to Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan, who couldn’t understand why his former club wanted to sign the 24-year-old.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is yet to start a league game for Liverpool since his move on transfer deadline day and has played just one minute in the Champions League for his new side.

He moved to Liverpool in the hope of being deployed in his favoured central midfield role but has so far been used by Klopp as part of his three-man attack, usually on the right-wing.

But Whelan, who won six First Division titles with Liverpool, believes he was the wrong type of player Liverpool should have been going for this summer.

I’m sure Arsenal fans are looking at it thinking, hmmm we’ll take that

“He’s signing another player that he’s got 10 of already. For £35m (€39.9m) or whatever," Whelan told the Irish Examiner.

“I’m sure Arsenal fans are looking at it thinking, hmmm we’ll take that. Because he’s not one that was always in Arsenal’s team.

“He needs someone who will protect the centre-backs like Matic, like Fernandinho, Kante.

“We’ve got Henderson and Can who get on the ball as a defensive midfielder and start running with it. It leaves a big hole.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania.

But he will be hoping to feature in Liverpool’s Premier League match against Newcastle this Sunday (4.30pm).
