Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool AS IT HAPPENED: Results and highlights as Reds draw again

PHILIPPE COUTINHO’S return to Liverpool’s starting XI yielded a third goal in as many games but Joselu benefitted from more dubious defending to hand Newcastle a 1-1 draw at St James' Park. See how the action unfolded with Express Sport.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS,

Thanks for joining me today. I’d like to wish you good luck coping without Premier League football over the next few weeks. The dreaded international break is upon us and there ain’t a thing we can do about it! Night.

18:52: Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson: “It feels like we are saying same thing. We do so many good things but come away frustrated. It is a strange feeling. We created good chances to win the game and were comfortable but overall we are frustrated.

"We have to keep going, keep creating and they will turn into goals. Saying that, we did keep going. I feel once we get one they will all start going in.

"Philippe Coutinho was brilliant again today. He deserved his goal. He is a great person, a fantastic player for this team. We all love him. A lot of things happen in football. Phil has been brilliant. He has put his frustration into games and is playing with freedom. He has been fantastic."

18:50: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “I am disappointed, frustrated, whatever you want. Away at Newcastle for each team will be a difficult place to play. We scored a wonderful goal and created wonderful chances. We shot the ball over the goal even when it was empty. We created five or six outstanding, big chances. Usually we score with one of them. I didn’t see one more chances for Newcastle.

"They got one chance and scored. That doesn’t feel too fair. We had a clear penalty. I don’t know what he has to do – pull the shirt off him? If you don’t help yourself no one else help you. It will be like this until we score. We play like this it makes sense that we play like this usually we score in situations like this. We have to accept this and carry on.”

18:42: Prickly start in Jurgen Klopp’s interview. Asked if his side could have defended better for Newcastle’s goal, he replied: “Yes.”

18:40: Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey: "I owed my team and I hope I've repaid them today. It is horrible being out of the team and even more when they are winning. The gaffer showed a lot of faith to play me and hopefully I can repay that. Benitez's CV speaks for himself. He is very detailed coach. It is great to learn from someone like that."

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Harry: What the hell is wrong with Liverpool at the moment? Gonna get battered by Manchester United after the break at this rate.

Wilko: Liverpool can kiss goodbye to Philippe Coutinho that's for sure, such a waste of talent in that team.

Stephen: Next season Jurgen Klopp's last chance *as he promised* if we still in this state, there is only 1 way left.. SPENT £100M EVERY SEASON!

18:35: Matt Ritchie, who was named Man of the Match, and Jonjo Shelvey are speaking with Sky Sports now. They’re basically saying today was a big reward for hard work and tactical nous. Full quotes coming shortly.

18:30: I sense Jurgen Klopp is going to be irritable in this post-match interview. He’s going to have to answer the same questions because his side have made the same mistakes over, and over again. Brilliance from Coutinho promptly followed by some abysmal defending.

NEWCASTLE 1-1 LIVERPOOL

FT: A resolute Newcastle come away with the point. Rafa Benitez got his tactics spot-on, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been made to pay for a ton of missed chances. Stay tuned because we’ve got all the reaction coming your way shortly.

91: Mo Diame replaces Ayoze Perez for the closing stages as Newcastle have a free-kick on the right flank. Matt Ritchie delivers… corner. The winger races over to take it and Diame pokes it at Mignolet.

THREE MINUTES ADDED TIME

90: Oh Alex! Alberto Moreno somehow manages to keep the ball in play with a cross from the byline, and the flying Oxlade-Chamberlain heads over from a couple of yards out.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park

89: As in the first  half, Liverpool have dominated possession in the second but unlike before the break, they have struggled to create chances.

No-one would have ruled out a repeat of those epic 4-3 thrillers on the evidence of the opening 45 minutes but it's been a much tamer affair in the second period.

And while Newcastle could counter themselves fortunate to be level at the interval, if they hold out until the final whistle, they will have just about deserved a share of the spoils.

88: Audacious dipping volley from Perez flies over. He saw Mignolet off his line and went for it.

86: Are we going to have a grandstand finish? Newcastle are sat very deep indeed but Liverpool can’t unpick the lock. I think we’re looking at a 1-1 draw folks.

85: Tough ask for Solanke. He’s sent a diving header wide of the near post. Would have been a spectacular finish.

84: Here comes the Ox. Can the midfielder make himself a hero in the dying minutes? He replaces Mo Salah.

83: Precious time ticking away as Jurgen Klopp urges his side forward. He won’t have anyone to blame for this result. His side have squandered more than enough chances.

80: Rafa makes another change with Dwight Gayle coming on for Joselu. That might help to stretch things a little more for Newcastle.

79: Close! Jonjo Shelvey is in the right place at the right time to clear Solanke’s header off the line from a corner.

78: Newcastle still sticking to their task. They have dropped a little deeper but the energy levels are still there and Liverpool look like their running out of ideas.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park

75: Newcastle are  lot more comfortable in the second half with Shelvey pulling the strings in midfield.

For Liverpool, both Sturridge and Salah have missed chances they would have expected to convert and neither looks particularly confident right now.

With 15 minutes left, all three results look equally likely.

74: Daniel Sturridge caught offside… AGAIN! That’s his last action as Jurgen Klopp shuffles his pack with Dominic Solanke and Roberto Firmino replacing Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane. Rafa also makes a change with Isaac Hayden on for Mikel Merino.

71: Perez goes down after a collision with Jordan Henderson off the ball. Play halted momentarily but no action taken.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: LIVE score, news and goal updates from St James' ParkREUTERS

70: Mo Salah is dropping a little deeper to collect possession and it’s causing Newcastle a few problems. Twice he’s played through Daniel Sturridge but the first was offside, and the second was bravely collected by Elliot.

67: It’s just not working for Liverpool in attack at the moment. Jurgen Klopp looks like he’s considering a change with Roberto Firmino warming up on the sidelines.

65: Ridiculous foul from Alberto Moreno, who hacks Merino down for no reason whatsoever. Ritchie prepares to deliver the set-piece… cleared. Just. The Reds are looking vulnerable here.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park

62: Liverpool in a nutshell. Clark miskicks but Sturridge can't take advantage with Elliot blocking his close range effort. The ball reaches Salah who shoots wide of a gaping target.

Klopp said last week: "I can't make my side more clinical." I suspect he may be saying something similar at the post-match press conference if Liverpool fail to win this one.

61: Ooooh drama! Referee Craig Pawson has a huge decision to make after Joe Gomez goes in with a high boot on Christian Atsu. The Toon fans are scream for red, but it’s a yellow.

60: Danger! Philippe Coutinho is standing over a free-kick in range. Ayoze was booked for kicking the ball away.

The Brazilian steps up… blocked. Daniel Sturridge attempts a ridiculous overhead kick from the looping rebound, but it’s straight out of play.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: LIVE score, news and goal updates from St James' ParkREUTERS

58: Newcastle sticking to their task well. Their pressing is forcing mistakes from the Reds, who’ve just seen Jordan Henderson spray a pass out of play. Christian Atsu then skips past Joe Gomez, but Joel Matip recovers to usher him out of play.

55: Jurgen Klopp looks absolutely livid after those misses. He’s been calling for his side to be more clinical all week and then something like that happens. Just starting to look like it could be ‘one of those days’ for Liverpool.

53: I just don’t believe what I’m seeing. Ciaran Clark makes an absolute howler when trying to clear a routine backpass. His sliced shot falls straight to Daniel Sturridge, whose shot is blocked. Mo Salah completely loses his composure for the follow-up and blazes over.

51: Jurgen Klopp’s got a few options on the bench. Most notably Roberto Firmino, who was dropped in favour of Daniel Sturridge this afternoon.

48: Not an overwhelmingly confident start to the half for Liverpool. Matt Ritchie steals the ball of Philippe Coutinho but his teasing cross is a little too close to Simon Mignolet.

45: We’re back underway folks. No changes at the break, fingers crossed that means we’re going to have more of the same.

HT: Quite strange. Liverpool have been out on the field for a couple of minutes with no sign of Newcastle. Jurgen Klopp clearly gave the lads the treatment in the dressing room.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park

HT: Lucky Newcastle.

Lucky to survive a 23rd minute onslaught and extremely lucky to cancel out Coutinho's opener with an equaliser which owed more to good fortune than design.

Joselu took an age to pull the trigger after latching onto Shelvey's through ball but when Matip tackled him, the ball ricochet off his shin and into the net.

Liverpool look capable of scoring whenever they cross the halfway line but it was the same in Moscow during the week and that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Any takers for a repeat result here?

TWITTER ROUND-UP

George: I really don’t know how many games should go before Jurgen Klopp realises that you get the same results when playing same tactics!

Jacob: Classic Liverpool, score an absolute worldie and then concede a horrific goal down the other end. Rinse and repeat!

Curtis: Everybody crying out for Daniel Sturridge to start this game yet he's been a useless, weak and greedy with the ball as per usual.

HT: After a fairly eventful two-minutes of added time, Craig Pawson brings the first half to a close. Liverpool have done more than enough to be leading at the break, but one moment of terrible defending has cost them dear.

44: Philippe Coutinho lines another shot up but he’s totally skewed it into the stands. Newcastle just need to get in level at the break.

42: The Reds have regained their composure now. Newcastle look happy to absorb the pressure and hit Liverpool on the break. Ridiculously exciting half of football going on here.

39: It’s all kicking off now. Newcastle have real belief they can take maximum point out of this, while Liverpool are appealing for a penalty after Dejan Lovren was having his shirt pulled during a corner.

NEWCASTLE 1-1 LIVERPOOL - JOSELU

36: Might be the most farcical goal of the season. Jonjo Shelvey finds Joselu with a simple ball through the middle, before Joel Matip accidentally knocks it against the striker’s shin when making a last-gasp sliding challenge. Simon Mignolet has no choice but to watch it dribble into the net.

Jurgen Klopp with a face like thunder.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park.

34: What was that stat about Liverpool having 121 shots in their last six games? It feels like they've had that many in the last ten minutes here.

Jurgen Klopp must have thought it was going to be one of those afternoons when the Newcastle goal had an amazing escape in the 23ed minute with two efforts hitting the woodwork and another being cleared off the line.

He need not have worried with Coutinho scoring a "worldie" six minutes later. Smart business turning down that £118m bid from Barcelona.

33: Philippe Coutinho tries his luck again from distance, but this one sails miles over the bar. I think we can forgive him for that one.

32: Jonjo Shelvey is perhaps guilty for not closing the little Brazilian down quick enough, but it’s easier said than done. Liverpool looking for a second.

NEWCASTLE 0-1 LIVERPOOL - COUTINHO

29: Wow, just wow. I’m running out of superlatives to describe Philippe Coutinho because he just gets better and better.

The Brazilian collects a clearance before cutting inside and rifling a 25-yard thunderbolt into the top corner. Rob Elliot didn’t stand a chance.

After knocking at the door, Liverpool have finally broken through.

27: Liverpool are totally dominant now. Newcastle are petrified of the counter-attacker, which means Joselu hardly has any support on the rare occasion he’s in possession.

26: Urrrrrr, what?! I don’t think scientists in a thousands years of research will understand how Liverpool haven’t scored! Wijnaldum directs a corner against the post, before Lovren and Mane have efforts cleared off the line.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park.

25: When Newcastle faced Tottenham at St James' Park on the opening weekend of the season,  they were content to sit deep, defend in numbers and rely on the counter-attack - it didn't work with the visitors winning 2-0, both goals coming after Jonjo Shelvey was sent off.

It's a very different Toon set up today with Rafa Benitez' side on the front foot, driving forward at every opportunity.

Both Matt Ritchie and Shelvey have had efforts on target though Simon Mignolet was not seriously tested with either shot.

Sixteen minutes into the game, Liverpool come alive with Sadio Mane meeting Joe Gomez cross with a meaty volley which crashes into the side-netting. And moments later, it takes two defenders to halt Mo Salah's forceful run.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: LIVE score, news and goal updates from St James' ParkREUTERS

23: Wasteful from Salah. Sturridge spins his marker and sets Mo Salah free. The winger takes a heavy touch and gifts it back to Newcastle. Sadio Mane was completely unmarked in the area.

20: Sadio Mane volleys Joe Gomez’s cross just wide of the goal. Would have been spectacular because that was an impossible angle.

18: Daniel Sturridge weaves his way into a good position but Lascelles manages to get his body in the way. I think it touched the defender’s hand but he knew nothing about it.

15: As expected, Liverpool are seeing the majority of possession, but Newcastle are quite content to sit deep and break when possible. Here’s an attack now. Matt Ritchie has space to manoeuvre on the right flank and forces a decent save from Simon Mignolet.

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at St James’ Park.

12: Newcastle fans unfurl a giant banner which stretches from one end of the Gallowgate Stand to the other. It's written in Spanish and has huge personal significance for Rafa Benitez.

It translates as "We will follow you everywhere, we'll always have your back. In spite of the lies, they tell us, we'll never doubt you. We are with you."

This was the chant Valencia fans chanted to Benitez during his hugely successful stint at the Spanish club before joining Liverpool.

10: Daniel Sturridge tries his luck with a chip from distance, but it soars over. Let’s call that a sighter for the lesser-spotted striker.

9: Jonjo Shelvey is looking up for the fight against his former club today. He receives the pass from Atsu, but his bending effort is straight at Mignolet.

6: Squandered! Can’t believe Liverpool haven’t scored. The Reds break at pace with Salah feeding Mane inside the six-yard box with a beautiful pass. The midfielder cuts it back for the onrushing Egyptian, but the pass is just beyond him. Should have been 1-0.

3: The stadium is absolutely rocking today. I know it always does here but it’s particularly booming today. Neither side seen much possession with the ball doing most of its work in the stands.

NEWCASTLE 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: We’re underway folks! This fixtures has thrown up some absolute classics in the past, fingers crossed it delivers again.

16:29: Minute's applause for Freddy Shepherd who sadly passed away on Monday.

16:28: Jurgen Klopp is doing his usual routine. Staring at the Newcastle players while they are doing their exercises. Doesn’t look in the mood to be disappointed today.

Matt: Shelvey and Merino midfield partnership is needed today, that extra spark in midfield going forward will help.

Darren: It's about time Daniel Sturridge got a start. Come on mate show them what you can do!

Fents: Shelvey & Manquillo will play the games of their lives today, hopefully Coutinho & the boys are feeling potent. Should be a tough one.

16:25: As you might have expected, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has said that playing against his former side will be a special and emotional experience.

The Spaniard was in charge of the Merseyside club for six years from 2004 and guided them to their fifth Champions League title in his debut season.

After spells at Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, Benitez was brought in to save Newcastle from relegation in March last year.

He did not succeed but helped them back into the top flight immediately and faces his old side to whom he has not lost in two previous meetings.

"It's a special game for me. It will be emotional, because I spent so many years there, and have so many good memories. My family still live in Liverpool, so it is my home," Benitez told Newcastle's website.

"I have a lot of positive, very good relationships with Liverpool fans, (including) the families connected to Hillsborough. There are a lot of connections, and it will be very emotional."

16:20: Here’s today’s starting XI folks. Quite surprising to see Daniel Sturridge preferred to Roberto Firmino in attack.

Newcastle XI: Elliot, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Manquillo, Shelvey, Merino, Ritchie, Perez, Atsu, Joselu.

Subs: Murphy, Gayle, Diame, Hayden, Lejeune, Darlow, Jesus Gamez.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Coutinho, Salah, Sturridge, Mane.

Subs: Karius, Milner, Firmino, Klavan, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Can, Solanke.

Referee: Craig Pawson.

16:15: Good afternoon folks, welcome to our LIVE coverage of Newcastle vs Liverpool from St James’ Park.

I’m sure Reds fans will have enjoyed what they just witnessed at Goodison Park with Burnley running out 1-0 winners against Everton, but can they bag a win of their own today?

It’s the final Premier League match before the international break ruins everything, so let’s savour what should be an absolute cracker!
