Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp should have followed Man Utd's lead in the transfer market - Carragher

Carragher was speaking after Liverpool drew 1-1 with Newcastle in the Premier League today, making it just one win from their last seven in all competitions.

The Reds defence once again came under criticism for Newcastle’s equaliser from Joselu.

Carragher was quick to point back to the fact Klopp did not sign a new centre-back in the summer to attempt to resolve the issue.

He says Manchester United signed a striker in Romelu Lukaku which solved their goalscoring problems and has made them title contenders this term.

At the end of the season Man Utd just went and bought Romelu Lukaku

“Do I think Liverpool are a title challenger this season? Did I think that at the start of the season? Possibly not,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I saw the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Spurs, possibly with the money that’s been spent or the players that have been brought in, I always thought Liverpool would be in a fight for the top four this season.

“Liverpool’s transfer window didn’t go well.

“You think of watching Liverpool in these first seven games, and it’s still early, but you take it back to Manchester United last season in terms of having a lot of games where they didn’t score and had lots of chances.

Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp's defence has come under severe criticism this season

“At the end of the season they just went and bought Lukaku and it looks like that problem at the moment is fixed.

“I still look at Liverpool and think they didn’t fix the problems in the summer that needed fixing. That is the big problem.

“I just feel whenever I do a Liverpool game, I’m going to be saying the same thing.

Jurgen Klopp’s getting the same questions, I’m giving the same answers and I think it always goes back to what happened in the transfer window.”
