The Tottenham midfielder, who has played seven times this season – mainly as a substitute as he rehabilitates from an ankle injury picked up in April – was pulled out of the under-21 squad ahead of Thursday night’s game with Slovenia.

Neither Delph, who was impressive at left back against Chelsea at the weekend, nor Jones trained with the rest of the squad.

And after a full assessment by the England medical staff it was decided that the best course of action was to spare them the trip to Lithuania at the weekend.

They have both been granted permission to recover at Manchester City and Manchester United respectively.

Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson and Michael Keane also missed the part-open training session with England.

But the trio underwent recovery work elsewhere after playing full matches on Sunday for their clubs.

Winks’ call-up is in part due to the fact that Tottenham team-mate Dele Alli is suspended for the first game at Wembley.

England can secure qualification for the World Cup in Russia next summer with a win at Wembley on Thursday.

The Three Lions are so far unbeaten from eight qualifying games.

Delph, 27, boasts just nine England caps and last appeared for his country two years ago.

Jones, meanwhile, played in both of England’s World Cup qualifiers last month - his first competitive appearances for his country since October 2015.
