Chelsea news: Blues much worse than last season, Bakayoko is no Nemanja Matic - Wilkins

CHELSEA are nowhere near as good as they were in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge.

Former Chelsea player Ray Wilkins: They can still win the title

That is the view of Sky Sports pundit and former Chelsea midfielder and coach Ray Wilkins.

Conte led the Blues to a record-breaking Premier League win in his first season in England.

The Italian manager made several changes to his squad over the summer, with the likes of John Terry and Nemanja Matic leaving, as well as Diego Costa being frozen out.

Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata were the high-profile incomings at Stamford Bridge and have helped their side to fourth in the table after seven games this season.

I don’t think Chelsea are anywhere near as good as last year

However, Wilkins does not agree with Antonio Conte's decision to let Terry and Matic leave.

He says France midfielder Bakayoko is not as good as Matic, who joined Manchester United in July for £40million.

“I don’t think we are anywhere near as good as last year,” Wilkins said.

“We had the best forward (Costa) in the league last year.

Chelsea news: Tiemoue Bakayoko is not as good as Nemanja Matic, says Wilkins

“We had people at the club that you need at a football club, like John Terry.

“I don’t know why we didn’t offer John something around the club to keep that Chelsea business going on, I really don’t.

“Bakayoko is no Matic, not yet anyway. Matic is just superb.

“I don’t think we are anywhere near what we were last year.”
