MANCHESTER CITY midfielder Kevin De Bruyne would not be world class if he hadn’t left Chelsea.

That is the view of pundit and former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson.

Chelsea sold De Bruyne to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2014 but he returned to the Premier League with Manchester City a year later.

Blues legend Frank Lampard suggested at the weekend it was the right call from all parties for him to leave west London.

Robson agrees and says he would not be the player he is today if he stayed at Stamford Bridge.

“He wouldn’t have become a world-class player, as Frank Lampard called him, if he stayed at Chelsea,” Robson said on ESPN FC.

“He would have been a sub for most of the time, he wouldn’t have got in the team at that particular time in front of Oscar, in front of Willian, in front of Lampard himself.

“So he did the right thing (in leaving Chelsea).

“(Jose) Mourinho played him for a couple of games, but Mourinho never really fancied him as a defensive player.

“Mourinho wants his midfield players, attacking players, to do both sides of the game.

“He criticised him on the two occasions that he played for not having the game understanding, which he’s doing at Luke Shaw at Manchester United at the moment.”

De Bruyne scored the only goal for Manchester City in their 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

City are six points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table.
