Chelsea news: Why Michy Batshuayi shouldn’t start despite Alvaro Morata injury - Wilkins

MICHY BATSHUAYI is not good enough to be a striker for Chelsea, according to former Blues player and coach Ray Wilkins.

Batshuayi now has a chance to stake a claim for a starting spot at Chelsea following a hamstring injury suffered by Alvaro Morata.

Morata looks to be out for over a month with the problem and with no other recognised striker in the Blues squad, Batshuayi looks next in line.

However, when Morata was substituted against Manchester City on Saturday with his injury, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte brought Willian on instead of the Belgian.

Wilkins says the Italian manager did that because it suited the game at the time to have more players in midfield.

Batshuayi hasn’t shown enough for me that he’s a Chelsea centre-forward

But he still does not expect Batshuayi to be starting many games in the coming weeks because he has not shown enough since joining the club in the summer of 2016.

“I don’t think it was as much a snub to Batshuayi,” Wilkins said on Sky Sports.

“I think the way City were playing, they used Fabian Delph as a left full-back but he got himself so high, and when he got himself so high, he was coming inside as well to give Manchester City a numerical advantage in the middle of the pitch as well.

“I think Conte looked at it and thought ‘hang on a second, we’ve got to try to counter this because they’re running rings around us’ and they were.
