Arsenal news: Arsene Wenger will look to offload Mesut Ozil in January, says Robson

That is the opinion of former Arsenal midfielder and ESPN FC pundit Stewart Robson.

Ozil is out of contract at the end of the season and has not shown any intention to extend his Emirates stay.

The German international will therefore be able to leave the club for free next summer.

So Robson thinks Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be keen to get rid of Ozil in January in order to recoup some money for him.

“I think they’re at that stage (where they want to sell Ozil in January),” Robson said.

Since Liverpool, Mesut Ozil hasn’t played that many times since and Arsenal have looked better

“Ozil has shown no indication to sign a contract at Arsenal

“The problem that Arsenal have if they do want to sell him is that he is on so much money, is there going to be another club willing to pay him the sort of money that he would want?

“So that’s going to be their major problem.”

Ozil has started just once since the humiliating 4-0 loss to Liverpool in August.

Arsenal are unbeaten since then, with their only draw coming against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Robson says a big reason for their change in fortunes has been the absence of Ozil, who has had a knee injury.

“Since the debacle at Liverpool, Mesut Ozil hasn’t played that many times since and Arsenal have looked a better side,” Robson added.

“One of the reasons is because they are starting to press the ball a little bit better and Ozil can’t do those sorts of things.

“So maybe Arsene Wenger, at last, has realised that Ozil for all his quality, for all his ability on the ball, for all his creativity, if he doesn’t defend and doesn’t show the right urgency to close the ball down, it makes Arsenal a worse team.”
