Liverpool news: Stephane Henchoz slams Reds defence - 'They won't finish in top four'

FORMER Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has blasted the Reds defence and reckons they have no chance of finishing in the Premier League top four.

Steve Nicol: Jurgen Klopp could be sacked next season

Liverpool have conceded 12 goals in the Premier League, which is the joint highest for a team in the top half of the table and manager Jurgen Klopp has come under fire from critics for not strengthening his defence enough during the transfer window.

Klopp was keen on signing Virgil van Dijk in the summer but Southampton refused to sell the Dutch defender.

Henchoz, who formed a formidable partnership with Sami Hyypia during his Anfield career, was hugely critical of the defensive set-up.

It seems that it is always the same mistakes, set pieces, they are very weak, very poor

"It was a big problem last season and everybody was hoping they could solve the problem," he told the BBC.

"I think they definitely should buy somebody.

"At least one or two centre-backs, they tried [Virgil] Van Dijk, but they couldn't make it happen.

Stephane Henchoz is unimpressed with Liverpool's defence

"I don't know. It seems that it is always the same mistakes, set pieces, they are very weak, very poor.

"The way it is at the moment, they have absolutely no chance of competing for the title.

"They would be more than happy to finish in the top four, but if they carry on the way they are conceding goals, I can't see them finishing in the top four unfortunately."
