Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp needs to make three new additions to his squad, says Aldridge

Aldridge believes Liverpool need a striker they can rely on to score them over 20 goals a season.

But he does not think Daniel Sturridge, who has struggled with injuries, is the answer to that problem.

“We do need a goalscorer that is going to get 20 goals plus,” Aldridge told Sky Sports.

“I’ve been saying that for some time now.

“We’ve got some very good forward players but Daniel Sturridge is being utilised as a squad player and not quite finding his form at the moment.

“He’s the one that perhaps could get us the goals that takes the pressure off the defence but it’s not ideal.

For me you need that one clinical scorer that can take the weight off the back four

“We will get goals and the three players up front are all worthy of getting 15 goals each within a season.

“But for me you need that one clinical scorer that can take the weight off the back four.”

Liverpool’s defence has suffered severe criticism this season after they failed to bring in a centre-back in the summer.

After a deal for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk fell through, the Reds are once again linked with the Dutchman's signature ahead of the January window.

But Aldridge believes Liverpool need to bring in two new players in that position.

Liverpool news: The Reds need a goalscoring striker and two centre-backs, says Aldridge

“I think he (Van Dijk) would have made a big difference at the back, we need a leader at the back,” he added.

“For what’s out there, from what I can see, he would have topped the bill.

“For whatever reason it didn’t happen, he’s still a Southampton player and you’ve got to respect that.

“I don’t know what Jurgen Klopp will do. If he can’t go and get Virgil van Dijk for whatever reason then perhaps you might have to have a plan B somewhere along the line because there is a position that needs strengthening.

“Not with one but perhaps two centre-halves in the next 12 months.”
