Man Utd News: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp dreamed of managing Red Devils, says old boss

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp dreamed of manager Manchester United, according to his former Mainz boss Eckhard Krautzun.

Steve Nicol: Jurgen Klopp could be sacked next season

Klopp’s Liverpool host Manchester United on Saturday, aiming to put an end to the Red Devils’ recent form.

Jose Mourinho’s side currently sit second in the Premier League table on goal difference, having won six of their first seven Premier League games.

Liverpool, contrastingly, go into the game on the back of one win in seven with the pressure mounting on Klopp’s shoulders.

And Krautzun, who managed the player at Mainz until Jurgen Klopp succeeded him in the dugout back in 2001, says the German wanted to manage United because there is more passion involved over at Old Trafford.

“I’m not surprised he does so well,” he told the Set Pieces website.

“When it came to his favourite club, however, Liverpool weren’t always number one.

“It would be his dream to go to England one day and his favourite club would be [Manchester] United. That’s what he said.”

Klopp was mentioned as a contender for the United job when David Moyes was axed in 2014.

They ultimately decided, however, to appoint Louis van Gaal as the Scot’s successor.

And Krautzun thinks Klopp would have taken the job if he had not been in charge of Borussia Dortmund at the time, revealing a chat he also had with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I said, ‘Jurgen Klopp, if he goes abroad, if he goes to England, his love would be Manchester United,’” Krautzun added.

“After three or four months not working, I knew that he wanted to be in action again…when the offer came from Liverpool [that October], I knew he would not hesitate because he wanted to get into a top club in England.”

Man Utd News: Jose Mourinho thinks Jurgen Klopp can win Liverpool the title

Current United boss Mourinho, meanwhile, thinks Klopp’s Liverpool are title contenders.

“They can win the title,” he said.

"Why not? Very good team, good players, good investment.

"[An] amazing history, desire of success, amazing Anfield [and] great supporters always behind the team in a strong way."
