However, United chiefs have been impressed by Mourinho and are convinced he is the right man to finally fill the void left by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Sun add the Glazer family have made it clear they are willing to back him to achieve success, with Mourinho wanting to get United back on top in Europe again.

Up next for United is a Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday (12:30pm).

But Mourinho has problems in midifield with Gary Neville believing Paul Pogba is a huge miss.

He said: “Paul Pogba is a big absence with his arrogance on the ball, so they will defend deep and be compact again, but whereas there was a back six at times away at Anfield last season, they can commit more on the break.”
