Mkhitaryan worked with Klopp when he joined Dortmund in 2013 in a £25.5million move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Armenian made his mark in his three-year spell at the club, scoring 23 goals in 73 appearances, as well as winning the Bundesliga and reaching the Champions League final.

Mkhitaryan, after a tough debut campaign at Manchester United, has found his groove and is a regular starter in Jose Mourinho’s side.

He will line up against Klopp’s men when United travel to face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday (12.30pm).

And Mkhitaryan has revealed he is thankful to Klopp for buying him as well as making him the player he is today.

“I had chosen Dortmund because I liked the way they play there,” Mkhitaryan told German magazine 11 Freunde.

“The players also liked me – and then there was the great coach, Jurgen Klopp.

“After I had talked to him, the decision had been made for me. I only wanted to go to Dortmund.

“When I came to Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp told me that I had to let go, and that it’s not good to think about football all the time.
