Man Utd news: Romelu Lukaku scores a lot of nothing goals - Paul Merson

ROMELU LUKAKU will face his biggest test in a Manchester United shirt this afternoon.

The Belgium international has been in phenomenal form for United since joining from Everton in the summer.

Lukaku has scored 10 goals in nine games in all competitions so far.

But United are yet to play any of the sides that finished above them in the league last season.

That will change today when Lukaku lines up against Liverpool, a team he has scored against just twice in 13 games.

Last season, 21 of his 25 league goals came against the bottom 13 teams, with pundits and former players alike questioning whether he could perform against the so-called big teams.

And Merson wants to see whether Lukaku can prove his critics wrong when United take on Liverpool later today.

“This is a game when Romelu Lukaku should go and prove all the doubters wrong, all those people saying he can’t do it in big games against big teams,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“This is a big game against a big team. It’s United’s biggest test so far and it’s his big chance to make a statement.

“I don’t think you can blame him for his record while he was playing for an Everton team who weren’t really expected to win games like this, who sat deep and made him feed off scraps.

“But this is Manchester United. It’s time to deliver.

“He scores a lot of nothing goals for me. Harry Kane scores big goals. Lukaku scores a lot of late goals in matches United have already won. It’s padding your total. Go and win your team the game.

“He needs to produce now because if he’s still not scoring in big games this season, then serious questions will be asked.”
