Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho was talking RUBBISH after Liverpool draw - Murphy

DANNY MURPHY has lambasted Jose Mourinho for suggesting he lacked the personnel to put up a stronger fight against Liverpool going forward.

Mourinho: Liverpool's midfield was stronger than Man United's

Liverpool and Manchester United cancelled each other out at Anfield yesterday but pundits and former players were proved correct in their prediction that Mourinho would adopt a defensive approach.

United had just six touches in Liverpool’s 18-yard box while Liverpool had 19 shots on goal and 62 per cent of possession.

Jurgen Klopp admitted after the game he was not happy with the point and took a swipe at Mourinho for settling for a point.

But the United boss attempted to point out having three midfielders in Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick out injured restricted his options for the game.

United had the opportunity to go nine points clear of Liverpool with a win while the Reds could have moved into the top four with all three points.

But both teams ended up losing ground on early pace setters Manchester City who claimed a stunning 7-2 win over Stoke.

And Murphy was not accepting Mourinho’s excuse for taking a defensive approach.

“With the players they’ve got they should have been better,” Murphy said on Match of the Day.

“He’s talking rubbish. They’ve got a hell of a squad and they should have been better.

“Liverpool weren’t brilliant, but at least they tried to win the game.”
