Jose Mourinho saw his side produce a drab display against Liverpool

That is the damning assessment of BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks.

United were held to a goalless draw away to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, and Romelu Lukaku was subdued during the game.

And while hailing Joe Gomez’s display for Liverpool, Crooks described United’s performance as ‘cowardly’.

“Thankfully, Liverpool did their best to make a game of it and none more so than the impressive Joe [Gomez],” Crooks told BBC Sport

“This is a young, versatile English player who can play as a full-back or in central defence.

Jose Mourinho: The three at the back tactic is wrong

Sir Alex Ferguson would never have subjected one of his teams, to such a cowardly display, especially at Liverpool

“What I like about him is he can actually defend, which is a rare quality in Liverpool's defence these days.

“He saw off Anthony Martial and later gave Marcus Rashford something to think about in a game in which Liverpool were allowed to dominate the play.

“Sir Alex Ferguson would never have subjected United fans, or one of his teams, to such a cowardly display, especially at Liverpool.”

United sit second in the table, two points behind Manchester City.

They travel to face Benfica in the Champions League next on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Liverpool meanwhile, will be hoping for a positive result when they make the trip to Slovenia to face NK Maribor.
