Jose Mourinho blasted for Man Utd tactics: He didn't risk Liverpool loss - Danny Murphy

MANCHESTER UNITED should have delivered a better performance against Liverpool considering the money invested in the squad this summer, says Danny Murphy.

Manchester United's Jose Mourinho set out to win a point at Liverpool

Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Saturday by a defensive-minded United side.

Jose Mourinho’s men managed just one shot on target in the whole game, while they were rescued on more than one occasion by goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Portuguese boss said after the game that he had come to get at least a point from Merseyside.

But ex-Liverpool star Murphy reckons that was the wrong approach and expected better from a manager who was give £160million to spend on players in the transfer window.

“Everyone wanted it to be a good game because that’s what you want to see with the big clubs,” Murphy said on talkSPORT.

“But thinking back to when we used to play United, we used to shut up shop and go there and nick an odd goal, an odds result. Which we got a few of actually.

“There’s nothing wrong with that.

“But when you’ve spent what they’ve spent on those players, with Lukaku up front, I expected more.”

De Gea denied Joel Matip a certain goal in the best chance Liverpool had against a stolid United defensive line.

At the other end Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had very little to do.

And, while Murphy can see why Mourinho set up like he did, the former midfielder still isn’t happy about it.

“If you had to choose one manager for a one-off-game to save our life it would be Mourinho,” he added.

“Setting up defensively and stopping a good team creating chances isn’t easy. It’s easier to destroy than create generally.

“Liverpool had the better chances but when you’ve done that (stop them) there’s a point in the game where you have a go. You have the fans quiet.

“But they didn’t take a risk getting it to Lukaku.

“Lukaku had one shot at goal. Other that that they didn’t have a shot on target. How much did they spend?”
