Chelsea news: Ray Wilkins reveals the one big reason Antonio Conte’s side are struggling

CHELSEA are struggling this season for one simple reason - their squad is just not good enough.

Chelsea news: Antonio Conte's squad is not as good as it was last season, says Wilkins

That is the view of former Chelsea midfielder and coach Ray Wilkins.

Antonio Conte’s side have already lost three games this season, two fewer than in their title-winning campaign last year.

Wilkins does not believe the signings brought in over the summer were better, or as good as, the players they were replacing.

Alvaro Morata joined from Real Madrid as a direct replacement for last season's top scorer Diego Costa.

Tiemoue Bakayoko has slotted into the Chelsea midfield alongside N'Golo Kante, the position previously occupied by Nemanja Matic, who joined Manchester United.

“I think the squad is weaker if I’m honest,” Wilkins said on Sky Sports.

“I think Bakayoko in the coming years will be an exceptional player, because he has that stature, he has that ability, he scored a goal on Saturday.

“He’s not a great scorer from the middle of the pitch, but neither was Matic.

“He had that nohow of how to play that position, Bakayoko is still growing into that situation.

Morata is currently out injured with a hamstring problem, meaning Michy Batshuayi is the only recognised striker in the Blues' first-team squad.
