Man Utd news: David de Gea is not my favourite goalkeeper - Peter Schmeichel

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Peter Schmeichel says his favourite goalkeeper in the world is Manuel Neuer, not David de Gea.

David De Gea: It's a dream to play for Manchester United

Manchester United star De Gea has been in scintillating form this season and made a stunning save to keep out Liverpool defender Joel Matip in the 0-0 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

That save led many to laud him as the best goalkeeper in the world.

Schmeichel was discussing David de Gea on Monday Night Football and refused to rank who he thought was the best in the world.

But he explained why he felt Bayern Munich No 1 Neuer is his favourite between the sticks.

My favourite goalkeeper in the world at the moment is Manuel Neuer

“I get asked this question all the time, ‘who’s the best in the world?’,” the Manchester United hero said on Sky Sports.

“My favourite goalkeeper in the world at the moment is Manuel Neuer. It has been for a long, long time.

“That’s because of the style of goalkeeping he gives to the world.

“He’s a brave young lad, he was a brave young lad.

“I watched him when he was at Schalke at Old Trafford, he was actually making a very similar save to that.

“And my eyes are like this, ‘who is this young fella?’.

“He’s brave, he’s playing so far out of his goal, he’s one of few goalkeepers who is actually off his line, far off his line, challenging, bringing the game to him, taking control.

“I like him for that.”
