Scholes played his entire professional career for Manchester United so it would be fair to say he has strong feelings towards Gerrard’s beloved Liverpool.

Tonight the former England midfielders were working as pundits, alongside another former Red Devil Rio Ferdinand, for BT Sport ahead of United’s 1-0 Champions League win at Benfica.

The panel were discussing Jose Mourinho’s tactics against Liverpool on Saturday, where they drew 0-0 at Anfield.

Scholes was quite critical of the Portuguese manager, but Gerrard disagreed.

For someone who hasn’t won the league, for me I see it more as clever management

The comment that made Paul Scholes smile at Steven Gerrard

“He is (a proven winner),” Gerrard said of Manchester United boss Mourinho.

“I’ll have to disagree because if United go on and do win the league, I think there will be enough games where they turn it on and wipe the floor with teams.

“People will then look back at maybe that point at Liverpool and go ‘that was very clever tactically, he set up well, he stifled Liverpool’.

“Maybe that’s the point that clinches it.”

And then came the moment which amused Scholes, as Gerrard brought up the fact the Premier League was the one trophy that alluded him in his career.

“Obviously these lads are a bit different to me in terms of they have won many leagues and they’ve played in really, really exciting teams,” he added.

"For someone who hasn’t won the league, for me I see it more as clever management and tactically spot on, if you go on and win it.”

Scholes greeted the comment with a sly smile, which you can see watch in the video at the top of this story.
