Manchester United defender Phil Jones is in fresh contract talks

Manchester United defender Jones has been an first-team regular in Jose Mourinho’s side since the manager arrived at the club last year.

He was praised by the boss last season after rushing back from an injury to help out the team during a defensive crisis.

And United are ready to reward Jones for his commitment to the Red Devils cause.

That is according to ESPN, who claim a source close to the player has confirmed negotiations have begun.

Jones is one of United’s relatively low-paid first-team players.

, with Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly all earning more than the England international.

Jones, 25, has played 10 games for club and country this season but was left on the bench for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica.

Victor Lindelof played instead of Jones against the Swede’s former club as a Marcus Rashford goal earned United victory.

Jones has, however, been an ever-present in United’s Premier League campaign and contributed to the clean sheet in the goalless draw at Liverpool last weekend.

He is expected to return to the first team for Saturday’s 3pm kick off at Huddersfield Town.
