Arsenal news: Olivier Giroud reveals wonder goal secret in Red Star win

OLIVIER GIROUD has revealed he looked for a team-mate before going for goal himself when bagging the winner in Arsenal’s 1-0 result at Red Star Belgrade.

Olivier Giroud scored a wonder goal in Arsenal's win at Red Star Belgrade

Giroud hooked home a Theo Walcott knockdown with just five minutes left in the Europa League clash.

The goal came somewhat out of the blue, with neither Giroud nor Arsenal having a particularly productive evening up to that point.

But the game changed after Red Star were reduced to 10 men.

Suddenly Jack Wilshere had space to run at the home defence and he did so - the England international finding Walcott, who subsequently set up Giroud.

But the Frenchman admits his first instinct wasn’t to shoot, before referring to his scorpion kick goal against Crystal Palace last season.

“In that position I can control the ball and try to play with another team-mate,” he said.

“But I didn’t see anyone so I tried to take it, a little bit like [the goal against] Palace.

“I was a little bit lucky because it was top corner, back of the net.”

Discussing , Giroud said: “I’m happy for the team because we were resilient until the end and we kept believing in our game.

“We knew it’d be a tough game and we needed to be patient and play our game, with our qualities. It was very difficult.

“It’s an amazing atmosphere here, a special atmosphere because the crowd is behind the team.”

He added: “Obviously we want to win every single game, but we’ve played two away games, so it’s nice for the future.

“We can try to win every single game in this group.

“Maybe we didn’t expect it but we’ve done a good job.”
