Liverpool news: Phillipe Coutinho should be sold in January - Mark Lawrenson

LIVERPOOL have been urged to sell Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona - while they can.

Phillipe Coutinho was heavily courted by Barcelona during the summer transfer window

Anfield legend Mark Lawrenson reckons his former club were wrong not to cash in on the wantaway Brazilian in the summer.

Now, he says, they should let him go when the January transfer window opens if the Spaniards offer anywhere near the £100million-plus they were prepared  to pay a few months ago.

“Prices have gone mad and I would have sold him in the summer," he said.

"I just think if you are getting £120 million for a footballer you take it - because he could fall over tomorrow!

"They could then have got two or three players to replace him, and think he'll go possibly in January."

What's more, Lawrenson believes Coutinho's departure would not have a marked effect on Liverpool's Premier League fortunes.

"It won't affect the dressing room," he told the AskFans website. "Players are players and if Barcelona come for you you'd think ‘treble my wages? Yeah, why not!'”

Lawrenson is also convinced that Jurgen Klopp will deliver success for Liverpool this season - even without Coutinho.

"Klopp is the right man," he claimed. "The only problem which everybody knows about is defensively they aren't great. But the players absolutely love him. He's just a proper bloke."
