Arsenal news: Martin Keown lays down Mesut Ozil challenge after Everton display

MESUT OZIL put in his best performance of the season in Arsenal’s 5-2 win over Everton yesterday, but now he must do it on a regular basis.

Leon Osman: Ozil leaving Arsenal would benefit Wilshere

That’s according to Gunners legend Martin Keown, who praised Arsene Wenger for playing Ozil alongside Alexis Sanchez and Alexandre Lacazette.

Ozil looked back to his best for Arsenal yesterday as he orchestrated their attack, creating a number of goal-scoring opportunities, and ended the game with one assist and a goal.

The Germany international has often come under heavy criticism this season, none more so than for his performance in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool.

But Keown was delighted to see the 29-year-old put in a ‘ruthless’ performance and wants to see the playmaker use his display against Everton as a marker for the rest of the campaign.

Now he has got to perform at this level every week

“For the last few weeks, Ozil has had his sulking head on. On Sunday, he was a creative genius. His body language was completely different. There was a positivity and energy to his play,” Keown told the Daily Mail

“Ozil created more chances than any player in a Premier League game this season and capped his performance with his first goal of the campaign.

“He showed a ruthlessness in his header from Alexis Sanchez’s cross that was not there against Watford last week.

“This was the first time that Wenger deployed a forward line of Ozil, Sanchez and Alexandre Lacazette in the Premier League. It was a perfect opportunity.

“Ozil seized his chance. Now he has got to perform at this level every week.”

Arsenal are next in action tomorrow night (7.45pm) when they face Norwich in the Carabao Cup.
