Next Everton manager: Peter Reid says his former side must act fast after Ronald Koeman was sacked

Ronald Koeman was sacked as Everton manager this afternoon following the 5-2 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park yesterday.

The Merseyside club currently sit 18th in the Premier League after nine games and are yet to win in their three Europa League group matches.

Reid did not want to be pressed on who he thought should take over but admits Everton are in a relegation battle so must get a new manager in soon.

“Listen, listen, there’s a few names being banded about,” he told Sky Sports.

Don’t ask me for names, because I’m hopeless at anything like that, but it’s got to be soon

Peter Reid on the next Everton manager

“There are a few top-class managers who are aware. I’m sure they will get their heads together and make the right choice.

“For me it’s got to be done sooner rather than later because we are in a relegation fight now.

“When you’re at the bottom of that league and there’s pressure on and the confidence isn’t there, you need a manager, you need a fresh outlook, more enthusiasm.

“Don’t ask me for names, because I’m hopeless at anything like that, but it’s got to be soon.”

Reid was sad to see Koeman leave Everton but ultimately thinks it was the right decision by his former club.

“It’s always a sad day when a manager goes but I thought it was inevitable to tell you the truth,” he added.

“Nothing against Ronald Koeman, a great player, but it just wasn’t happening at Goodison Park.

“I think with the outlay of so much money with the recruitment of players and the manner of the defeats, I think it was something that the club had to do.”

Former Everton defender David Unsworth, who is expected to be in caretaker charge for the Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea on Wednesday, was the early favourite to replace Koeman.
