Arsenal 2 - Norwich 1 (AET): Super sub Eddie Nketiah rescues lucky Gunners

ROOKIE striker Eddie Nketiah was not even born when Arsene Wenger took charge of Arsenal, but last night he marked a dream home debut by scoring twice to spare his boss’s blushes.

Wenger threw on 18-year-old Nketiah in a desperate bid to keep his side in the competition and within 15 seconds he had equalised before heading home the winner in extra-time.

Championship Norwich, who led until the 85th minute thanks to Josh Murphy’s opener, will still be wondering how it is Arsenal and not them going through.

And without the intervention of Nketiah, whose first-team involvement had been a brief substitute appearance against Bate Borisov last month, it would have been a different story.

The tie took time to get going with Alex Iwobi having the first sight of goal but his 25-yard shot failed to dip underneath Angus Gunn’s crossbar.

Norwich’s Nelson Oliveira then freed Mario Vrancic but he failed to test debutant Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey, dragging his shot wide.

Gunn then showed fine reflexes to palm Rob Holding’s close range header over after Theo Walcott’s corner.

It had been all Arsenal but Norwich caught the home side cold with Murphy’s 34th-minute opener.

James Maddison, who scored the only goal in Sunday’s

East Anglian derby win, found time to slide Murphy through a gaping hole in the Arsenal defence and the winger did the rest with a clever chip.

It nearly got worse for Arsenal when Oliveira’s low shot was pushed out by Macey in the 40th minute.

Arsenal stepped it up after the break and Jack Wilshere’s handball claims against Ivo Pinto were rightly ignored.

Arsenal’s high defensive line was almost exposed again with Mohamed Elneny fortunate to escape with just a yellow card after hauling down Oliveira as the Portuguese striker bore down on goal in the 55th minute.

It coincided with Norwich’s best spell of the evening, Murphy sending a header straight at Macey before the young goalkeeper had to be alert to cut out a dangerous cross from Maddison.

And it was Norwich who actually looked the more likely to win it. Murphy missed a golden chance to wrap up the tie in the 72nd minute as he chipped over the bar with Macey in no man’s land. Vrancic also missed a good chance and it came back to haunt Norwich when Nketiah equalised from close range.

In extra-time Walcott was denied by Gunn but he would have no such luck when Nketiah headed home a corner in the 96th minute, despite Norwich claims of a push.
