Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been backed by former Old Trafford assistant Mike Phelan

That’s the verdict of Sky Sports pundit Mike Phelan in the wake of criticism of the Portuguese’s tactics.

Mourinho’s team enjoyed a scintillating start to the season as they went toe-to-toe with Manchester City.

But they’ve been slammed in recent weeks for failing to show the same attacking prowess, particularly in their 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

Mourinho has been accused of not using his expensively assembled United squad to its full potential.

Phelan reckons the former Chelsea gaffer is taking a pragmatic approach to securing success though.

He has certainly got the experience and tactical nous to be able to produce winning teams and he is going to do that with Manchester United

Phelan told Sky Sports: "Over a 90-plus minute game things change all the time. A game plan is a game plan; it's the flexibility from then on which counts.

"He has got a record and his record is winning things and you don't win things on one game early in the season. It takes a period of time and a process.

"If that way of things works at the end of the season then that is your judgement and he has certainly got the experience and tactical nous to be able to produce winning teams and he is going to do that with Manchester United."

Pearce: Mourinho using tactic by publicly criticising players

United bounced back from Saturday’s defeat to Huddersfield by beating Swansea in the Carabao Cup last night.

And they’ll be hoping to carry that form on when they return to Premier League action this weekend.

Mourinho’s men are second in the table going into Saturday’s showdown with third-place Tottenham.
