Liverpool rejected the Catalan side’s efforts to sign him last summer but they are likely to renew their interest in the New Year.

"He was a warrior and a fighter. People say he looked ungainly, but you knew what you got with him.

"I know there were issues off the field with Sakho and the manager took him out of the first-team set-up, but three months is plenty to isolate someone."

Jason McAteer believes Philippe Coutinho will still join Barcelona

Klopp had no Plan B

8.55: Jason McAteer has bemoaned Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for failing to have a Plan B in case he missed out on a deal for Virgil van Dijk.

"Unfortunately he didn’t get the players he wanted in the market. But, the problem for me is, he didn’t have a Plan B," McAteer told beIN SPORTS.

"If you can’t get Van Dijk, and you know you need a centre-half, then surely there must be a Plan B? Surely there must be someone else.

"He didn’t go in the market and buy that someone else and now we’re seeing the downside of not doing that."

Coutinho to Barcelona deal claim

07.45: Former Liverpool star Jason McAteer reckons a deal to take Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho to the Nou Camp may have been agreed.

McAteer explained to beIN SPORTS: "[Andres] Iniesta is gonna be there for life. But he’s only got another season. He’s not gonna play consistently next season, or the season after. He’s on his way down, Iniesta. Coutinho, I feel, was always that replacement.

"They will come back for him in the summer. I’ve got no doubt about it.

"I think the deal, possibly, has already been done."

Chairman responds to takeover speculation

07.00: Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has denied claims Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have knocked back a £1.5billion offer to buy the club.

Werner told the Liverpool Echo: "We have better things to do than batting down rumours about negotiations with Ms Staveley.

Werner's comments come off the back of speculation that financier Amanda Staveley is looking to lead a takeover of the Reds or Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
