Villa went closest to claiming all three points, with Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia hitting the bar late in the second half.

And when asked whether they could have won, Terry said: “I think so.

“I think first half we probably weren’t at our best, to be fair. I thought they had the better of the first half.

“I thought second half we came into it and were probably on top.

“Out of the 90 minutes, probably an even game.”

AS IT HAPPENED

The result extended Villa’s run to just one league defeat since August 19, but Terry was disappointed to leave St Andrew’s with a solitary point.

“I think momentum’s key in this division,” he sad.

“What it means to the city, the people, what I’ve noticed this past week it means everything, so to come here and not lose is a plus but we wanted three points. Unfortunately not.

“We go into Wednesday and, hopefully, go again.”

captain Michael Morrison thought his side could have claimed a first league win against Villa since 2005, with Jota guilty of wasting a glorious chance.

He said: “I think it really got going second half, our fans were bouncing, it was frantic, it was quick. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances.”

Blues are unbeaten in two home games since Steve Cotterill replaced Harry Redknapp.

“Our home form’s picked up,” Morrison said. “We need to sort out our away form and start getting some consistency, but we’ve been hard to beat in the last few home games.”
