Man Utd transfer news: Mourinho needs £700million to build a squad like Ferguson, says Allardyce

That is the view of former England manager Sam Allardyce.

Mourinho splashed out almost £150million on new talent in the summer in the shape of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof.

Manchester United currently sit second in the Premier League table, four places above where they finished last season.

Despite the dramatic improvement in terms of league position, Mourinho has still received criticism for his style of play.

Some Red Devils fans want to see the type of football played by Sir Alex Ferguson’s teams, with the Scot winning 13 league titles during his reign at Old Trafford.

But Allardyce says it is harder for Jose Mourinho to build a squad like that these days with the rise in transfer fees.

“Everybody plays more open attractive football if you’ve got the players, if you’ve gone and spent and bought those players," Allardyce told beIN Sports.

“Finding those players is harder than ever before, there’s fewer of them and they’re hundreds of millions of pounds now.

“It’s a very difficult task now to build a Manchester United team that Sir Alex Ferguson had for instance.

“That would cost you probably in the region of six or £700million in today’s market.”

United are in Champions League action tomorrow when they host Benfica (7.45pm).
