Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho takes swipe at Red Devils supporters ahead of Benfica clash

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has hit out at the club’s supporters.

Mourinho: Benfica will give Man United a real test

Mourinho has been under scrutiny over his perceived pragmatic approach to winning football matches in recent weeks.

At the final whistle of Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday, Mourinho looked towards the nearby camera and gave a 'shush' gesture and in his press conference, Mourinho said his actions were directed at his critics.

"Some people speak too much; calm down, relax a little bit," Mourinho said.

"Don't speak too much; speak, speak, speak. Relax. Relax a little bit, don't be so nervous. Don't be so excited.”

But ahead of United’s clash with Benfica this evening, Mourinho has now taken a dig at the club’s fans in his United Review programme notes.

He wrote: ”I hope that you enjoy the game more than some of you did against Tottenham."

Speaking last night, former United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports he thought Mourinho’s shush gesture was aimed at those who have attacked the manager.

He said: "I think [the reaction] is one of a man who feels he has been unfairly criticised within the last couple of weeks.

“That was him saying: 'I told you so, keep your mouth shut, do one everybody, I know what I'm doing, I'm in control, I'm a winner.'

"I have to say he's changed a lot since that City game, I think he's recognised he's going to win his way, he doesn't care what people say, and that shush was: 'Be quiet, I'm going to do it my way, I'm going to win my way.'"
