Roma vs Chelsea: Rio Ferdinand has questioned the selection of Cesc Fabregas

N’Golo Kante returned to full training this week after recovering from his hamstring injury but he is not named in the 18-man squad for the Champions League clash.

In Kante’s absence, Blues boss Antonio Conte went with Cesc Fabregas as the midfield partner for Tiemoue Bakayoko.

But Ferdinand says that may leave Chelsea too open and he instead would have played David Luiz there.

“Yeah it does (look attacking),” the Manchester United legend said of the Chelsea line-up.

“To go to Rome, it’s a difficult place to go when you’re playing Roma.

“This Roma team are confident, the last game at Stamford Bridge they were superb, clinical, and they’ve got experience.

“I think in the midfield I’m maybe concerned at just having the two players in there.

"Fabregas isn’t the most mobile anymore.

“I thought he would have gone in there and thickened it up, maybe (Andreas) Christensen in the back three and Luiz in midfield.

“But Conte is tactically very aware and he knows this Roma team better than most.

“We’ll see if it plays out the way he sees it in his mind.”

Ferdinand's concerns were proved right, as Chelsea went down 3-0.
