22:25: Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "I'm very proud of my players and I congratulate them. I'm so pleased for Dele and our fans.

"The victory is so important for us and the players. It's a win over Real so it's great for the club and fans. There's a long way to go until the end of the season. What's important is trying to achieve our challenge and target.

"Of course this win gives us great belief for everyone and confidence. We are now in the next stage of the Champions League. But now it's so important to compete against Crystal Palace next weekend. Like a manager you can't stop thinking.

"I told you yesterday that Dele was coming. It's important for him - his debut in the Champions League this season. It's important he felt good. I feel a little bad for Toby Alderweireld we have to assess it.”

22:20: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "At half time, it was a similar situation to the last game against Huddersfield against an even more defensive side. But we did not create enough and it was going to be hard work. They changed completely their usual style and you can see how good they are. We had a good start with the counter-pressing but then forget to move quicker. The second half decided the game.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both did well. We need this quality when we make the changes and we need all the players. Georginio Wijnaldum got an injury but the ankle is swollen and it is not a good sign.

"The group is maybe the most interesting in the Champions League, nothing is decided. If you want to play in February, you have to win your games. The penalty from James Milner was good but the goalkeeper made a fantastic save. We have to think about this, these boys usually do it from this distance, we will find a solution."

22:15: Manchester City star Sergio Aguero: "I am very happy for this moment. I am happy because the team helped support me. This moment is one time. Napoli are a good team. Away in the Champions League is difficult. I'm happy to win and qualify. Every game, we play the same way."

I really don’t see why not. Atletico Madrid are virtually out, while Bayern, Barcelona, and Real Madrid have shown they’re beatable.

21:45: “Great performance. Harry Kane, he was a doubt before the game, the way he played today, holding the ball up, bringing others into the game was great. He didn’t score but contributed in other ways.

“Dele Alli, stepped up, there’s been a bit of criticism of him in the early part of the season. He answered a lot today with some cool finishing and getting in the right areas.

“I just think this Tottenham team really will learn a lot from this. They’ll gain from this in terms of playing at Wembley, being able to win at Wembley. This could be a really good catalyst for the season for them.”

FT: Tottenham will never forget the night they bushed aside Real Madrid. Arguably their greatest result at Wembley. It books them a spot in the last-16. Full reaction to follow.

90: That’s two in two for Daniel Sturridge, who wonderfully controls and powers in Alberto Moreno's delivery. 

THREE MINUTES ADDED TIME

90: All getting feisty between Dembele and Ramos. The Spurs midfielder leaves him on the floor in agony with a late challenge and gets a booking for his troubles.

88: Dembele sticks one on Ramos, and the Spanish defender returns the favour. There’s some pushing but it’s a storm in a tea cup.

86: A win tonight won't secure Spurs top spot, but it will see them qualify for the last 16. It’s the same story for Manchester City.

84: A few more nerves inside Wembley now as Spurs start to drop deeper and deeper into their own half. They need to push out a little more to keep the visitors at bay.

81: It wouldn’t be a Champions League night if Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t on the scoresheet.

The superstar pounces on a chaotic moment in the Tottenham penalty area to stab past Hugo Lloris.

Ronaldo has scored 10 goals against Tottenham in all competitions, more than against any other English side.

80: Should be 4-0. Trippier, who’s got to be considered for MOTM tonight, dinks a cross over for Alli to nod wide. Huge cheers for Harry Kane as the striker is replaced by Fernando Llorente. What an unexpected luxury for Mauricio Pochettino.

74: Zidane has taken Isco and Benzema off, and replaced them with Asensio and Borja Mayoral. Really waving the white flag now.

62: Napoli aren’t done yet! Jorginho sends Ederson the wrong way from the penalty spot after Sane went in late on Albiol.

TOTTENHAM 3-0 REAL MADRID - ERIKSEN

65: Tottenham are in dreamland! They are absolutely taking the European champions apart.

It’s a simple break with Harry Kane crossing the ball over to the onrushing Christian Eriksen, who cooly coverts.

This could get seriously embarrassing for Real Madrid.

63: Honestly, when it’s your night. There’s a goalmouth scramble in Tottenham’s penalty area and Ramos’ effort is blocked on the line… by Cristiano Ronaldo!

60: More great news for Spurs as APOEL equalise against Borussia Dortmund. What a night for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

59: Vorm was about to be introduced but Lloris is staying on for the time being. Would be Tottenham’s second injury of the night.

The midfielder makes a mockery out of Casemiro and Sergio Ramos by giving them the slip with a couple of dummies before seeing his deflected strike hit the back of the net.

Wembley erupts, while Ronaldo looks like he’s going to implode.

54: Have the floodgates opened? Not quite. James Milner's effort is pushed onto the post after Roberto Firmino was fouled by Aleksandar Rajcevic.

NAPOLI 1-2 MANCHESTER CITY - STONES

48: All change in Naples. Manchester City are now 2-1 ahead as John Stones header hits the bar and just bounces over the line.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 MARIBOR - SALAH

51: It’s taken them an age, but Liverpool have opened the scoring against Maribor through Mo Salah. Good to see he’s recovered from that penalty miss on Saturday.

48: It looks like Zinedine Zidane has matched Tottenham’s formation. It’s not worked yet as Harry Kane steals possession and sends a dangerous cross that Ramos pokes away from the lurking Eriksen.

44: Karim Benzema does well to connect with a cross that was just behind him to force a save. There’s a pause in play as Ben Davies goes down injured. They’ve already lost Toby Alderweireld!

41: Oh Harry! Trippier bundles through two challenges before cutting it back to Sissoko, who completely mis-hits it. The ball falls kindly for Kane, but he’s scuffed it.

38: Danger! Winks tugs Casemiro’s shirt and the midfielder hits the deck like he’s been shot. 10/10 for effort.

Toni Kroos dinks it nicely over to the onrushing Sergio Ramos, who can’t adjust his body quickly enough and the chance goes begging.

34: Manchester City are level. Pep Guardiola’s side have been knocking at the door and Nicolas Otamendi heads his first ever Champions League goal from Gundogan’s cross.

35: Should be 1-1. Hakimi drives down the left flank before finding the unmarked Ronaldo, whose snapshot is straight at Lloris.

34:  Dele Alli has scored three goals in his last four games for Spurs; as many as he scored in his first nine this season. 

33: Real Madrid are here for the taking if Spurs can keep their composure. They just don’t look interested in defending. Clearly been watching Everton lately…

30: Casemiro creates space for a shot and forces Hugo Lloris into a smart save. That goal has lit a fire under Real Madrid.

TOTTENHAM 1-0 REAL MADRID - ALLI

27: And there’s the breakthrough!

Harry Kane refuses to give up on a lost cause and wins the ball off Nacho right on the byline to force a throw-in.

From that he finds Harry Winks, who does well to spot the run of Kieran Trippier, who squares the ball across the six-yard box where Dele Alli slides in to convert.

If that doesn’t get England fans excited about the World Cup, I don’t know what will.

26: Toby Alderweireld off with what looks like a hamstring. Major blow because he’s been fantastic at keeping Ronaldo quiet.

NAPOLI 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY - INSIGNE

21: Well you can’t say it hasn’t been coming. Napoli have been dominating things here and take a deserved lead through Lorenzo Insigne, who blazes his effort into the roof of the net.

23: Real Madrid clear Kieran Trippier’s corner buy only as far as Jan Vertonghen, whose volley back into the box narrowly misses Harry Kane.

Seconds later, Marcelo inexplicably passes the ball to Harry Winks inside the area. The young midfielder swipes at fresh air the first time round, and chips it to Casilla with his second.

20: Have Sergio Ramos and Nacho ever met before? You could quite literally lay the M25 between them. So sloppy and zero communication.

16: Spurs are going to have to capitalise on these chances. Sooner rather than later, otherwise a certain Cristiano Ronaldo will make them pay.

14: More mistakes, more Tottenham chances. Casemiro is really slow in possession and Dele Alli pinches it off him. He releases Harry Kane, who attempt an audacious chip that Casilla gathers.

11: Tottenham are in… close! Harry Kane plays a simple ball over the top to Christian Eriksen, who delays too much before allowing Sergio Ramos to recover. This Real Madrid defence looks extremely shakey tonight.

9: Isco’s corner is met by Sergio Ramos, who sneaks ahead of Sanchez to power over from seven-yards out.

8: I know Spurs have been beating teams with less possession, but they’re going to need more than this! I think the North London side have touched it twice.

5: With the match just underway, this is the noisiest I have heard Wembley, whether it is Tottenham or Arsenal – cup finals generally only mean half the supporters are singing at a time. A patch of red in the away end suggests Real Madrid did not sell all their tickets – despite the fact it is the first chance their fans have had to come this stadium.

3: Terrific atmosphere inside Wembley tonight. I don’t think the Spurs fans have stopped singing since 18:45! Steady start from both sides with the visitors seeing more of the ball in midfield.

1: And we’re off! Incidentally, there was a very warm applause from Spurs fans when the name of former midfield man Luka Modric was read out. Nice stuff.

19:35: As I’ve just said, Gareth Bale isn’t available tonight, but the Welsh wizard has given Real Madrid fans something to cheer about.

He’s posted a training video on Twitter as he steps up his rehabilitation from a nasty calf injury.

He wrote: “Good sessions this week. Good luck to the boys tonight, gutted to not be playing at Wembley but working hard to get back out there!

19:30: Spurs, of course, are not the only ones who will be up for this one tonight. Real Madrid will feel they have a point to prove after Pochettino’s young upstarts held them in the Bernabeu. Which is worrying.

Tottenham are still getting their feet under the table at their temporary home and an early Madrid goal could make this a very testing evening indeed. But so what if Ronaldo and Co do cut loose in a way they were not allowed to in Spain?

They have done that against better sides and remember this is only Tottenham’s third season of Champions League football.

Whatever happens tonight can only build and not derail the Pochettino project.

19:25: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he’ll never under-estimate teams no matter how much the odds are in his side's favour.

That sounds like the kind of lie you have to say. Kind of like when when your partner tries a new hair style and asks how it looks.

Anyway, here’s what the German said before tonight’s clash.

"I am from Germany so I know in 1954 we lost against Hungary in the group stage really clear then won the World Cup final. Nobody would have expected that. That's football. That is how I learned it pretty early in my life. It's always possible. It's all about our performance," Klopp explained.

Much excitement among the Tottenham press team when they were watching the final stages of the UEFA Youth League game between the Under 17 side and Real Madrid’s youngsters which kicked off at 3pm at the club’s training centre.

A 3-2 win for the Premier League side leaves them with seven points from their four games, three more than the Spanish giants. An omen for tonight’s encounter?

NAPOLI vs MANCHESTER CITY

19:15: Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri hopes supporters will strike some fear into Manchester City. He sounds like a friendly chap...

City won the first Group F encounter between the early leaders of the Premier League and Serie A when they held on for a 2-1 success a fortnight ago.

Sarri now hopes fans can help turn the tables by creating a difficult atmosphere. He said: "Playing at home is an advantage for us with our great fans but City are certainly used to this kind of atmosphere. I would like to see some fear on their faces."

TOTTENHAM vs REAL MADRID

19:13: Tottenham team pretty much as expected – Dele Alli makes his first appearance in Europe this season with something to prove but I expect him to relish that.

Ironically, thanks to his powers of recovery they once again have “the Kane factor” with which to unsettle the opposition. It used to be known around the club as “the Bale factor” but tonight Real Madrid don’t even have that.

Another former player Luka Modric, is a tidy opponent for anybody though, and with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to pick out, Tottenham’s young-looking team (Sanchez, Winks) will have to be on their mettle. Only a few seats taken so far, but the atmosphere is building already…

SELL-OUT ATTENDANCE EXPECTED

19:05: Expect delays in London tonight.

No, I’m not referring to anyone using Southern Rail, although I suppose they should always expect a diabolical service.

I’m relaying a message from Tottenham’s communications department, who recommend all fans arrive at a Wembley transport hub no later than 90 minutes before kick-off.

I suppose you can always entertain yourselves with a £9 beer or £25 burger…

WHAT CAN BE DECIDED

19:00: Here’s a look at the possible permutations ahead of tonight’s fixtures.

Group E

- Maribor will be out of the qualifying race if they lose and Spartak win on Wednesday.

Group F

- Manchester City will qualify if they avoid defeat at Napoli on Wednesday.

Group G

- Besiktas are through to last 16 with a victory, or with a draw if Leipzig win at Porto.

Group H

- The winner between Tottenham and Real Madrid at Wembley will guarantee qualification.

MADRID HAVE REAL INJURY CONCERNS

18:55: Much has been made of Harry Kane's fitness in recent days, but Madrid travel to London with a number of their own injury concerns.

Former Tottenham favourite Gareth Bale has not travelled due to a calf injury which also kept him out of the draw against Spurs two weeks ago.

Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Mateo Kovacic and Keylor Navas have also remained in Madrid as Zidane's squad takes a hit.

18:50: This is a Big One.

When I strolled along Olympic Way more than three hours before kick-off, it already felt like a Big One, an excited buzz around the place already.

Indeed, everybody has half an eye on Wembley tonight. Even the guard on the train I caught from the heart of Kent in mid-afternoon passed on his best wishes to any Tottenham fans on board.

“Good luck,” he said, “I think you are going to need it.”

The record attendance for an English club in the Champions League is up for grabs – Spurs’ home gate of 85,512 against Bayer Leverkusen is the one in the firing line – with the game a virtual sell-out and officials just waiting to see how many rock up.

18:45: Huge relief around Wembley as Mauricio Pochettino names Harry Kane in his starting XI.

Kane is just one of three changes Mauricio Pochettino has made from the defeat to Manchester United. Elsewhere Sanchez and Trippier replace Sissoko and Aurier, who are among the substitutes.

Zinedine Zidane makes just one change from the side who were beaten by Girona over the weekend. Nacho replaces the injured Varane at the back.

Aguero and Raheem Sterling are in for Jesus and Bernardo Silva, while the Danilo is chosen ahead of Kyle Walker at right-back.

Ilkay Gundogan makes only his third start of the season in the middle of the park.

18:25: All eyes will be on the events that unfolded at Wembley tonight, but there’s plenty going on elsewhere.

Liverpool welcome Slovenian side Maribor to Anfield, two weeks after annihilating them 7-0. Hard to see anything other than a cricket score on Merseyside tonight.

Manchester City go head-to-head with Napoli knowing they will qualify if they avoid defeat.

The rest of the fixtures go something like this: Borussia Dortmund vs APOEL, Porto vs RB Leipzig, Sevilla vs Spartak Moscow, Shakhtar vs Feyenoord.

Besiktas are currently drawing 1-1 with Monaco after 70 minutes. Lopes and Tosun got the goals.
