Everton news: A Sam Allardyce-type manager will take over if the Toffees don't beat Watford - Keown

That is the view of BT Sport pundit and former Everton defender Martin Keown.

David Unsworth is currently in caretaker charge at Goodison Park after Ronald Koeman was sacked last month.

Unsworth wants the job full-time but is yet to win a game ahead of tonight’s Europa League match away to Lyon.

Keown says tonight’s result will not affect Unsworth’s chances of getting the role but says he must beat Watford otherwise Everton will look elsewhere.

“Well time will tell, he’s getting two opportunities to do it,” Keown said ahead of the clash with Lyon.

They’ll be someone else coming along, perhaps a Sam Allardyce-type character

Martin Keown on the next Everton manager

“He said he’s got to go and win games. I don’t know if it’s the end of the world if they don’t win tonight.

“But if they don’t win at the weekend then he’s surely got to be out of a job or they’ll be someone else coming along, perhaps a Sam Allardyce-type character, whether Unsworth can work with him as well, there’s an opportunity for that.

“Maybe perhaps it’s untenable because he’s actually said he wants to be the manager.

“I’ve thought he’s handled himself well but he’s got get results on the pitch.

Neville slams three Everton players for Leicester performance

“He’s got to do that on the training ground or in matches like tonight and understanding where the problems are.

“We looked at some of those clips and quite often (Tom) Davies, young players, young pups, are running out of position and creating problems.

“The manager has to see that for the players and make sure he stitches that information in, they do the right job at the right time.”

Everton went on to lose to Lyon, conceding three goals in the final 22 minutes to go down 3-0.

Sam Allardyce is currently second favourite for the job behind Burnley's Sean Dyche.
