Man Utd news: Gareth Southgate reveals he was influenced in Ashley Young call up

GARETH SOUTHGATE says he recalled Ashley Young to his England set-up because Manchester United managers have always trusted him.

The wing-back has been a permanent figure at Old Trafford since making the £17.5million switch from Aston Villa in 2011.

Young has  played under five different managers at United but always retained his spot in the team.

Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Ryan Giggs (caretaker), Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all entrusted the 32-year-old with a staring spot.

And his performances have finally earned him his first England call up in five years.

Ashley Young returns to the England squad after a five year absence

He’s a player every Manchester United manager has picked, and that tells me something about his mentality.

Young last pulled on a Three Lions shirt in 2013, in which he was a 68th minute substitute during a goalless draw with Ukraine.

But he has now forced his way back into the plans and now has the change to impress and try to win a seat on the plan to Russia 2018.

On 32-year-old Young’s recall, Southgate said: “Generally speaking we want to look at younger players, and develop the team, but I’ve always said if a more senior player is playing well and warrants the call-up, we should include them.

“He’s a player every Manchester United manager has picked, and that tells me something about his mentality and the trust they have in him.”
