Everton news: Koeman not naming Oumar Niasse in his Europa League squad was a disaster - Keown

Everton currently find themselves in the bottom three of the Premier League with just two wins from eight games so far this season.

The Toffees have also exited the Europa League after just four group games and their form led to Ronald Koeman being sacked last month.

At half-time of tonight’s 3-0 defeat to Lyon, Keown was bemoaning some of the decisions by Koeman with regards to the lack of strikers at the club after Romelu Lukaku joined Manchester United in July.

Midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson was playing up front for Everton in France with Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez left out and Oumar Niasse ineligible after Koeman failed to name him in his Europa League squad.

Niasse is not available for this competition, obviously Ronald Koeman never named him, which was another disaster

Keown says Koeman should have had another striker target to Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, who turned down a move after meeting the Dutchman at Everton’s training ground.

“Niasse is not available for this competition, obviously Ronald Koeman never named him, which was another disaster,” Keown said on BT Sport.

“Niasse is probably the answer to play up front. They need a recognised player up front, they’re not even looking at Sigurdsson at times.

“Put the ball in there. I don’t want to mention (Romelu) Lukaku every time Everton play, but you would have put the ball into the box instinctively.

Joey Barton slams Everton manager David Unsworth in LIVE interview

“They look up, they see Sigurdsson, and they don’t deliver.

“He had Giroud in the building and he never made that. He put all his eggs into one basket and Giroud didn’t come.

“There should have been (a plan B), that’s what top management is.

“There almost should be another player waiting in another room ready to make the switch if he doesn’t come to the club.”
