Man Utd news: Paul Merson makes mammoth claim regarding Jose Mourinho and Arsenal

ARSENAL would be challenging for the Premier League title if Jose Mourinho was in charge at the Emirates.

"Shut up and get on with your job" Roy Keane blasts Mourinho

That’s according to former Arsenal star Paul Merson, who claims the current Manchester United boss sets his sides up not to get beaten.

The Gunners are currently nine points adrift of early pace-setters Manchester City at the top of the table.

United are City’s nearest challengers and earned a solid 1-0 win over title rivals Tottenham at the weekend to stay second.

It looks set to be a close battle among the league’s best once again this season and Arsenal will be hoping to return to the Champions League after missing out on the top four last year.

It was the first time since 1996 Arsenal failed to finish fourth or better in the English top flight.

And they haven’t finished top of the pile since 2004 when Wenger had the likes of Patrick Viera, Ashley Cole and Thierry Henry among others.

The Red Devils have not won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 but Merson believes Mourinho is the answer to ending United’s wait and would be able to do the same at Arsenal.

"When United appointed Mourinho, they employed him for what he is doing now," Merson said on Sky Sports’ The Debate show.

"They didn't call him in to play the Sir Alex Ferguson way and win 4-0 and 5-0. He will come in and do it his way.

"If he was at Arsenal, they would win the league.

"He sets them up hard to beat and they go from there."
