Jose Mourinho: Manchester United boss has settled his tax case

Manchester United boss Mourinho was accused of evading tax for the years 2010 to 2013 when he was Real Madrid manager.

The Red Devils boss arrived at court room No 4 in Pozuelo de Alarcon just after 9.30 for his court appearance.

And the United boss has now reached a settlement with the authorities, agreeing to pay £2.94million dating back to his spell at the Bernabeu.

He said: “I did not argue. I have paid and signed with the state to say I am definitely tax compliant.”

Mourinho had been accused of failing to declare tax garnered from image rights.

The Portuguese manager owed Spanish tax authorities 3.3 million euros (2.92 million pounds).

Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with United in 2016.

Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, “with the aim of obtaining illicit profits”.

But the 54-year-old's settlement means he will face no further punishment.

Meanwhile, the case has come just days before United go up against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Mourinho yesterday brought forward his pre-match press conference due to today's trial.

The Portuguese has come under fire in recent weeks for his defensive tactics.

And he will no doubt realise the importance of the weekend's game.

Mourinho's United were thumped 4-0 when he returned to Chelsea last year.
