Willock was given a taste of first-team action during the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

He then made his debut against Doncaster in the Carabao Cup in September and has gone on to make four further appearances for the Gunners.

And he was also named the England Under-19 squad for their European Championship qualifiers.

Arsenal said in a statement: “We would all like to congratulate Joe on his new deal, and look forward to his continued progress with the club.”

At the start of the season, Arsene Wenger promoted the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson and Willock from the Under-23 squad.

And Willock is delighted to have the opportunity to play at such a young age.

He told Arsenal.com: Playing for this club is a massive thing for me and something that I dreamt of all my life.

“I’m just getting more experience and game-by-game, I think I’m improving.

“I’m always looking to learn from the midfielders next to me like Francis and Jack and Theo ahead of me.

“I’m just carrying on learning from them and getting game experience. I feel like I’ve got stronger and fitter.

“I just want to carry on doing well really and learning and getting more experience. Hopefully I’ll get a goal and carry on getting games."
