Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho offered faint praise after Chelsea defeat by Graeme Souness

JOSE MOURINHO has to be cautious in the biggest games or Manchester United will come off worse.

Jose Mourinho: Chelsea were in control of the game

Those are the thoughts of Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness.

United lost ground on leaders Manchester City in the title race after a 1-0 defeat away to Chelsea on Sunday.

An Alvaro Morata goal proved to be the difference, while Romelu Lukaku failed to hit the target for the seventh game in a row.

United have been routinely criticised for their style of football under Mourinho in the games against the top six.

But Souness thinks this is the Portuguese tactician’s ‘big sell’ to the players.

“I think United will have to go about their business in certain way,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“The big sell for Mourinho to the players like the European final and like the Liverpool game, is to say to some of those players who feel they like are big players in the dressing room, ‘we’re going to play a certain way today, we’re not going to take them on in an open game of football, we’ll play a cautious way and nick the game’.

“That is a big sell to the players.

“I know if a manager said that in the dressing room I was in, it would have not been accepted.

“I think that if United in the very biggest games and that includes coming to the Bridge, come and play in an open fashion, they will come off second best a lot of the time.”

United trail City, who beat Arsenal 3-1 yesterday, by eight points in the table.
